International Karate Plus, often abbreviated as IK+, developed by Archer Maclean and released by System 3 for the Commodore 64 in 1987. Also known as Chop N Drop in the US and released by Activision.

“IK+ - Call it a sequel…. And you’ll land up flat on your back. They called International Karate ‘the greatest Karate beat ‘em up yet’ (Commodore User). And who are we to argue? But Archer Maclean has come up with a stunner: A third fighter. An amazingly animated background. New moves (including double head-kick and a spectacular backflip). Re-mixed music by Rob Hubbard. And Balls!”

Not massively different from International Karate, but it is a different game. The graphics are redrawn and look extra sharp and vivid with a great use of colour. This time there are 3 players but at least the computer players fight each other while you fight to reach Black belt rating again.

This game is more fun to play as you have to last 6 hits to win the round. There is only 1 type of bonus round this time but it gets more difficult the longer it goes on. A backwards step for this game is having only one background and breaks the illusion that you are fighting in an international tournament.

The music sounds a bit screwed up in this video, maybe due to limited sid emulation in winvice 3.3. I do let it play out at the end of the video. Also at the start and end of the video I show a few effects that can be performed on the background by pressing multiple keys together. -
