Turbo Charge is a Driving/Combat game and was developed and released by System 3 for the Commodore 64 in 1991.

“Just how good a cop are you? Are you prepared to take your driving skills to a new dimension and risk everything in one final mission to squash the lethal arms dealers? Strapped in and fired up, take the controls of your unique italian sports car and use all your high speed skill and red hot reactions in this, the ultimate and fastest C64 driving adventure.”

This seems to be System 3’s answer to the god awful port of Chase HQ and maybe a better version of Chase HQ II on the C64. The game opens up with a short intro continuing System 3s high quality presentation although maybe more could have been done for the title screen. The game has some nice artwork for the intermission screens and the game moves at a believable speed although I think Outrun Europa is faster still. The roadside has some really nice stylises gfx which help this driving game stand out from similar games that all seem to use Probe Software driving engine. Combined with a great soundtrack which varies throughout the game we are left with a very slick product on the c64.

However, the difficulty can be a bit of a put off as you are not only fighting limited fuel and damage but also time so the game is constantly fighting you.. There is a turbo function to help you get to the level end quicker but at the cost of a lot of fuel. There are fuel drops but if you miss them....you are not gonna make it to the end. Destroying cars on route to the end allows for some car damage to be repaired before moving onto the next level. At various stages you will hit a fork in the road. Take the wrong one and you will hit a dead end and be arrested - gameover. Generaly you should just follow the cars ahead of you and you will be fine, but sometimes the round swings quickly or you get knocked by another car and end up in the wrong lane. Super annoying.

This will be System 3 Softwares final game on the C64. Fuzzball was the next game due for release late1992 but System 3 had dropped support for the C64 around this time so the game ended up being shelved or locked in a vault never to be seen again! A demo can be played though from issue 24 of Commodore Format. Along with Thalamus and Rainbow arts, System 3 gave us some of the best games on the Commodore 64.
