Dominator, developed and released on the Commodore 64 by System 3 in 1989.

“Warnings, S.O.S.’s and stories of total planet absorption had been banded around a terrified solar system for some time now but had been conveniently overlooked by spineless, so-called ‘leaders’. And now it was too late. This was incomprehensible. This was immense. It’s vast appetite was closing in on Earth and the putrid smell of partly digested nations hung ominously in space above a society that had refused to believe that its very existence would ever again be in question. Who could fight? Who would dare go inside this mutant horror and battle against it’s bodily defence mechanisms, to obliterate its sustaining organs, to stop its crazed hunger stampede across the universe? Mankind need you, the ‘Dominator’ … You need to fight … it needs to feed ….”

Following in from Last Ninja 2 , I guess System 3 wanted to try something else, a ‘Shoot em up’. Withthew above premise the stage is set. Go save earth!. The first level is a vertical shooter and plays pretty much as you would expect. Fairly easy , not much to memorise and moves smoothly. The game also looks quite nice, although not up to the standard of other similar games by 1989. Im thinking r-type and Armalyte as well as the shoot em up levels in Turrican 2.

The remaining 3 levels are horizontal and now you can collect power ups to increase the power of your weapons. Don’t collect to many speed boosts as the craft will go out of control! As you progress between levels it does seem a bit disjointed and with lack of an ending the whole game feels like an incomplete project. The game is very short and there is no high score list. . The gfx do get a bit glitchy at times and im not sure if that's an emu issue or not. I don't recall how it played on my actual c64 25 years ago! It is not a terrible game but it lacks the polish that System 3 had established in previous and future games. I have also recorded the Spectrum version of this and it is a much harder game. Lots of bullets to dodge from ceiling and ground turrets.

There is also a preview of this game which is a rolling demo, although it lets you move around the final stage. It also features music in game which is surprising as the retail game has no music or sfx option. The title music of the retail game is used in game for the preview. The Preview loader music has been added to the end of this video as it didn't make it to the final game.
