Catalypse, developed and published by Genias and released in 1992.

“This will take you beyond the edge of darkness into a world of terror and fear. The ship may be state of the art but is the pilot good enough to survive this mercyless battle? 5 Gigantic End Level Monsters. 6 Hi-Tech Weapons Systems. Galactic Soundtracks. 1064 Alien Sprites. Digi-Sounds.”

A horizontally scrolling shoot’em up very similar to such games as R-Type and Armalyte. You fight through 5 scrolling levels against many enemies and fight a large end boss in much the same way as R-Type. Collision detection can be sketchy and doesn't take much to get you killed. The levels continue to scroll along much the same way as Armalyte. However you die and come back so quickly that you don't always notice that you have died and spent one of your few lives.

The game does stand out though in its presentation and that's one aspect of a game that really stands out on the c64 or even any of the 8-bit home computers in general. The game has an Intro sequence with digi sampled speech and an animated end sequence. All the while having multiple audio tracks playing throughout the game. It’s a good game but can be overly difficult at times which can quickly put you off playing but that is true of any shoot em up from back then and even now.

I have not played the game before now except for maybe a demo from a Commodore format magazine tape. Maybe it was the demo, or maybe I just sucked at playing it but I don't recall any interest in getting the game. The game is freely available now, released by the developers in a 1.1 version with a few fixes including some for the collision detection. In more recent times I have read that the game had mixed review scores with a scathing review score of 30% from Zzap 64 which was one of the most prominent C64 magazines at the time and may have contributed to the game not doing so well and not many people remembering it, including myself.
