Shadow of the Beast, developed by DMA Design and published by Ocean in 1990.

Shadow of the Beast is an original Amiga game by Reflections and published by Psygnosis in 1990. Once of the best known games on the platform for its technical prowess showing what the Amiga can do as well as being well known as one of the most boring and unfair games on the platform from a gameplay perspective. As far as I know, it was only released on cartridge.

The game may not push the C64 hardware wise but it does still look and play the part. The collision detection is highly suspect at times though so sometimes the enemy will connect with you even though there is a visible gap between you. It can be hard to judge when trying to punch them. There are some small gameplay changes as you don't get as many enemies on screen at once to overwhelm you and the health pickups are all very useful. By the time I reach the final boss I have enough energy left not to care and get it over with quickly.

The game has some nice music and doesn't look bad overall. This conversion is missing level 4 (Shoot em stage) which is a bit of a bummer. I think it was missing on the spectrum version as well. It won't ever be as well remembered as the Amiga version but I think it is still a good game to have on the C64.
