Control part 8: Both is good (PC / Ultimate Edition)
0This segment splits time between both DLCs, finishing The Foundation and starting AWE. (There's fittingly a double-meaning to the title, but the other would be spoilers from the previous segment.)
The Foundation wraps up one loose end that the main story had left open, and features a couple of twists of its own. Meanwhile, AWE seems to have plenty of supplemental lore that should be of interest even to players who've never touched Alan Wake. I can't have much appreciation for the Alan-Wake-specific cutscenes, not only because I've never played the game, but also because they include tons of annoyingly jittery cinematic effects; if this sort of thing was standard in Alan Wake, I'll hard pass on that even notwithstanding any questionable gameplay design aspects.
One thing that I can clearly tell is inspired by Alan Wake, though, is the presence of new mechanics focusing on light. Unfortunately this results in some annoyances, as you'll find yourself navigating plenty of dark areas with at most a telekinetically-suspended floodlight to help - but naturally you're likely to drop or yeet this during combat. Still, it certainly provides a change of pace from the rest of the game, and makes for some creepier-than-usual situations, so it'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
