Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex - Episode 1: The Original "Crash 4"
In today's episode of the "Wrath of Cortex" playthrough, we learn about Cortex's newest plan to conquer the world and complete the four of the levels in the first hub world.
First things first, I really want to apologize if I sound like downer in these first few episodes. When I was recording those episodes, it was late Sunday night and I had spent all day that day and the day before trying to troubleshoot some issues I was having with OBS on my main computer that I encountered when trying to record the game that I was originally planning on playing. And then the cherry on top was the fact that Dolphin didn't want to play nice, what with my game freezing randomly. As such, while there is some validity in my comments, you don't have to worry about me doing anything too drastic. So with that said, onto the actual description.
After having a Legion of Doom-style meeting with Uka Uka and his minions (who have very minimal presence in the game outside of the intro cutscene), Cortex decides to release the Elementals, four masks that each embody a different element- earth, water, fire, and wind- in order to power up his latest mutant: Crunch, a hulking bandicoot that was introduced as the Shadow the Hedgehog of the "Crash" series. Seriously, some of Crunch's lines in this game sound like something you'd hear in "Shadow the Hedgehog". As such, just like in the first two "Crash" games, our goal is to collect 25 crystals in 5 hubs in order to save the day.
Though in the first hub, you'll quickly notice that this game isn't afraid to experiment with different vehicles, with the second level featuring a da Vinci-esque flying machine that controls like a bulkier version of the plane from "Warped" and third featuring my personal favorite in the game: the Atlas sphere. Sure, this thing can feel a bit strange at first to control, but once you get used to it, it can be a lot of fun zipping around levels like something right out of "Super Monkey Ball". However, while the vehicles featured in the first hub are pretty decent, there are some later on that are more miss than hit.
As for the standard levels, in this video, we tackle the first level, which is a snowy level with decent ice physics. Sure, this game can have long loading times and a good chunk of the levels lack the polish of the classic games, but besides the music, if there's one thing it did better than its predecessors is give us ice physics that aren't all-or-nothing when it comes to movement. Then, for the fourth level, we get a solid medieval stage that, unlike the ones in "Warped", lets us explore the inside of a castle, complete with all kinds of death traps and a dragon chase that's pretty cool, albeit a bit underwhelming.
