Dark Souls 3 - Crow Quills [v1] - PVP Guide #81
Crow Quills is known for being one of the strongest pure dex weapons, reaching higher AR than Estoc, and enjoying a 120 critical damage rating, better than most daggers.
Here's are some of my thoughts on the weapon:
1. Don't be too aggressive, you can out trade some opponents, however you won't outpoise them. You need to get close, and just remain unpredictable, fake a dash attack and start to test your opponent. If they are too aggressive, you can quickly punish them, which is where thrusting swords really shine, very similar to daggers.
2. Just outside of melee range, you can safely attempt to punish opponents using your WA projectile, however, don't overuse this, because it becomes less effective if you do. It's worth noting that it will interupt alot of attacks, including all casters. It combos into and R2 that lunges forward, but if you are going to attack you might as well just use your R1 combo when you land instead, since it has just about the same range, but comes out faster. The knives do more damage at close range, and they are spread closer as well, so I try using it in melee range, or just outside of it.
3. The running/backstep L1 is surprisingly good... if you take the time to memorize it's range and poise. It can be used to trade with an opponent during their attack animation, this seems to work best because it allows you to land your own attack without worrying about them stepping out of range.
4. As for the Rolling L1, and Neutral L1, they'll deal higher damage, truly taking you into Greatsword damage range, however their hitbox and reach are a bit more difficult than the already short R1, so yes for fun you would use the unique dual wield moveset, but in a serious fight, I would probably only consider the WA knives, and the running/backstep L1.
Although I had a lot of fun with Crow's, especially because of it's stylish moveset, I can see why people will choose Estoc over it. That extra bit of range, the hard to avoid Estoc R2, and the fact that you can simply swap to infused dagger for ripostes makes it hard to justify using Crow Quills at a highly competitive level. You're going to get a better shield and piercing sword setup with Estoc, and so that's mostly all you're ever going to see in Arena, because everyone is a try hard (like me)
Hope that helps, leave any tips, questions or comments you have below, and I will take a look, thanks.
