Dark Souls 3 - PVP - Irithyll Rapier + Crystal Chime (SL123)[v1]
This is the kind of weapon that becomes more viable the more skilled the user is. That's because it actually does decent damage, especially if you get Leo Ring damage and a Frostbite to proc during your fight. *However*, your timing has to be so precise and your reactions have to be so good, that you are going to do better using another weapon and just bringing the same skills.
Irithyll Rapier's combination of poor tracking and very short range make it a nightmare to use against the current popular strength/poise builds. It got to a point where I felt parrying was more consistent than simple outspacing/punishing techniques. I lost many matches that I would've otherwise won with an easier build.
Some notes on using the weapon:
Like other piercing sword class weapons, the trick is to keep your opponent lined up, and avoid angles because of the poor tracking. Its a good idea to push into them, or retreat and have them follow.
1. The WA was a very rare good choice, the obvious windup means almost no skilled player will be confused by it. But it can actually roll catch, and it can also punish an R2 that's being wound up. Ironically there is very little chance you will get this off on an opponent with a shield, since they will be the ones most interested in avoiding it.
2. To trigger Frostbite, its much better to let snap freeze build it up, then have your attacks trigger the damage, so that your opponent cant simply roll through and avoid it. The weapon stun gives you a much better chance for getting the damage off.
3. Leo Ring and this weapon's decent AR can actually mean there are situations where it's okay to trade. In particular if you think you can also trigger Frostbite, which can boost the total damage up to 550+ in a single R1, this really did happen for me several times.
3. Just be sure not to spam Snap Freeze, its actually very easy to punish and trade with, since it can only do 200 damage, and the animation has a long frame at the end that can be punished. It's especially good as an area of denial tool, and you can use the fog to hide a switch up to a parry tool. It can also be used to bait an opponent into using their dash attack on you.
