Dark Souls 3 - Firelink Greatsword - PVP Guide [v1]

Firelink Greatsword has never really inspired me to use it. Could it be that I wanted the weapon to change its class type mid battle? Could it be that the coiled sword never looked like a cool weapon in the first place? Who knows, but coming back to it now that I am much more experienced with the game, my overall opinion of it has actually increased.
I noticed right away that I was hitting over 300 per R1 after the weapon's self buff was activated. That's an important milestone when it comes to damage because it allows you to mostly shut an opponent down in two R1 combos, if you don't outright kill them. So no matter how you feel about this weapon, it's always going to be at least average in the tier ranking.
Here's a breakdown of the gameplay:
1. At the start be sure to safely get your WA off to start up the weapon buff, it feels like it lasts 40-60 seconds, I did not measure it to get a precise number.
2. It's convential but you could play the rest of the game just trying to catch your opponent with an R1 combo. The R2 can be used as a mixup, but otherwise it has limited use.
3. If you want to enjoy yourself, you need to practice free aiming and predicting your opponent, so you can use the weapon art. Be sure to use it in a way that makes the timing for a backstab too risky for them to pull off. Or place your back against a wall. You can also use it to trade - the hyper armor is very strong.
4. Be sure to safely rebuff the weapon as soon as an opportunity presents itself. If your buff ends, your opponent might decide to pressure you so that you don't get an opening to use the WA for the rebuff.
I guess my biggest disappointment is that the WA doesnt do more damage for it's long windup, or they could've had it be a stance with two options, so that you don't feel limited in using such a telegraphed move. The other thing is that perhaps the weapon could've had different scaling, having this be a quality weapon makes it compete with so many other greatswords. It struggles to fill a unique roll and that's a big killer for a B tier weapon. For it being the coiled sword that always rests in a bonfire, you'd think Pyro scaling would be a no-brainer, right?
