DFFOO [JP][Kelger LC] I have surrounded all of you by myself
Well, 100% FR/BT month happened. After a free Cater BT, this time is a pity. Possibly rip Strago/Fusoya later.
As usual, LC content is not hard at all. Very chill time and it is kind of funny that when Kelger meets Kimahri, he just straight up asks if he was a werewolf lol.
Could have gone the Dorgann + Kelger, route, but I feel like Dorgann has been used a bit too much, so I paired him with Cor/Reno this time. Well solo Kelger is obviously a choice, but long time viewers would know I don't like fights with just one character countering from start to finish.
Boss: Evil Gaze
Force:
- accelerated charge
20/50/80%: Cutting in turn order (with BRV gain)
* Pretty much always use "Spiral Tackle (HP)"
FA: Black Candlelight (ST BRV+HP)
- this attack ignores currently designated targeting
(but if a character draws fire, then it would target said character still)
- can be dodged
FT: 20T
- Player BRV dmg down
- use "Spiral Tackle+" on its turns
Spiral Tackle+ (melee ST BRV+HP x2):
- Ignore BRV/HP mitigation/nullification
Weakness: (cancel FT)
- FA that deals melee BRV dmg
No HP threshold mechanics for this boss.
General Approach:
Not much to say about this boss. Since everything can be dodged (at least for the entirety of my runs), you can slot in an evasion character and simply win. Kelgar, Edgar, Cater, Galuf or even Eight would have an easy time with this one.
The boss does have pre-attack BRV gain. Also it has ignore BRV/HP mitigation/nullification attacks, so use mitigation based characters like Gladio, Beatrix, Auron with caution.
Alternatively, since they pretty much always HP attack, you can use HP silence or paralysis to deal with them. Jihl Nabaat, Cloud or even Paine would be some of the picks for this playstyle.
Other than that, "tank" and spank to your heart's desire.
Regarding Kelger:
Kelger is an evasion character. Though he has two different ways to react to an enemy's presence and there are some differences between him and other evasion characters.
1. Preemptive reaction to enemy turns
First he preemptively reacts to enemy turns, not attacks (though that would be mostly the case). Whenever they try to act, he starts attacking. This ST attack saps BRV, let him gain BRV all based on his ATK and it does not consume BRV at all. Also it does not cause a break, as it has no BRV dmg. This attack is solely powered by his current BRV.
His BT double trigger this preemptive strike attack.
2. Counterattack an attack that he dodged
This is an attack that triggers off of his dodges. It is a ST BRV attack, but it has strong AOE spread dmg that it often looks like it has full AOE dmg.
His BT does not double trigger this attack. One dodge is one attack.
3. Buff based target lock
Much like Rubicante and Leila, Kelger keeps the enemy locked onto him through his own buff. This is very convenient as you really want enemies to take turns due to (1) and (2) and you wouldn't want them to stop targeting you due to bosses overcoming a lock debuff's duration. This is also great for 6WQ, because you don't need to reapply cover on characters coming out of the second team. As long as Kelger's buff is maintained and not dispelled, his mere presence would keep the targets focus on him.
As a reminder, on the hierarchy of getting enemies' attention buff based lock is in between cover and the lock debuff. Kelger would overwrite lock debuffs from someone like WoL, but would still get covered by someone like Galuf and Gladio.
Note that you may have a delayed counter from him if Cor breaks and push back the target (his own preemptive cannot break an enemy), but Kelger would still have (1) triggered whenever an enemy moves.
4. High AD FT
He has increased AD during FT if you use his FR. You can add more self delays through Reno or crystal passives D3/D6.
Red crystal D3/D6 seems to have immense value. Kegler, Reno, Beatrix are all this type of characters. (Yet I haven't even started on red crystal)
There are two things that you may need to be aware of when using Kelger:
A. He cannot keep you safe from AOEs
Unlike other cover/evasion characters, he does not make your entire party dodge things nor does he provide substantial AOE mitigation or HP regen to your party. He is quite like Shadow in this regard, as they both focus on dissipating ST threats.
That being said, he does have a C88 that provides some HP dmg mitigation, though that may not be enough if you are facing an AOE trigger happy boss.
If you really need AOE evasion, best turn to Cater/Yuri or even Edge. He is more an opportunistic attacker first character.
B. His EX buff duration
It is a similar problem with Weiss. A buff that is vital to their core mechanics is tied to their EX, and they don't have fast charging EXs. Weiss's is his additional attacks, Kelger's provides him with evasion up. With accelerated FG charge, the timing of its QS expiration may coincide with the timing of you starting FT. So it is best you fresh it in prep phase.
