Diablo IV Beta Rogue gameplay - I'd been having a blast... until I died
There are very few new upcoming releases that interest me at all. I think the market has become oversaturated, hype has become a standard to replace common sense while we as gamers have become pampered... However, when I learned about the release date for Diablo IV, I really got excited. Not because I expect this game to be as ground-breaking as the first two games in the franchise. No. I expect it to be a great hack'n'slash experience filled with content and end-game elements that will allow me to hop into the game from time to time for years to come.
Then, I learned about the ongoing beta tests and decided to give the game a try. This video is my complete attempt at the game with the rogue class (which is kind of like a hybrid of the amazon and the assassin class from Diablo 2) until I died (I set permadeath on to add some tension to the game).
Here are my final thoughts:
- the game will be really good, nothing spectacular or completely original - it's hard to rediscover such a characteristic genre, especially when your game is one of its forefathers. Everything you would expect from Diablo is here: the atmosphere, the music, the action - what else do we need?
- I experienced at times some serious performance issues which looked similar to MMORPG lags - I guess this had something to do with the online nature of the beta tests. I really hope so and I'd rather have much more fluent gameplay in more crowded locations (like the main city/hub).
- players nagged about Diablo 3 having too innocent graphics and atmosphere that made it look similar to Torchlight. I did not have the feeling that Diablo 3 lacked something in the atmosphere. We simply saw a graphical loop in the series, from pixelated 2.5D to 3D. No wonder we felt D3 being DIFFERENT from D2. What is even more important: it is impossible to recreate the initial "Wow" factor we had when we saw D2 for the first time. Time has passed, we have seen a lot of new games, have become older - we are unable to have the same emotions and relive our nostalgia through a modern game. BUT the devs listened to the crowd, oh yes they did. "You want gloom, gore and guts? Here you go!"
At the end of the video, I died because of being in a hurry. At some point (this video consists of several shorter sessions) I learned about the gift you will receive for reaching lvl 20 with a character during the beta-tests - a wolf cub in a basket! About two months ago, we lost our beloved dog so I somehow felt the urge to get the item no matter what, but I had a lot of other errands to do over the weekend. That is why I tried to rush several times through one of the dungeons... and lost my character just before reaching lvl 20. Thankfully, beta tests lasted until Monday, so I created a new character (with permadeath turned off) and managed to get to lvl 2 and unlock both feats of strength. All I need to do now is patiently wait for the release of the full game. And I know I will have a lot of fun with it!
