2If you’ve forgotten your iPhone passcode and can’t unlock your device, don’t worry—you can reset it to regain access. This process erases all data and settings, so a backup is key if you want to recover your data later. Below is a step-by-step guide to fix this issue immediately, based on Apple’s official methods.
What to Do Now
Method 1: Reset iPhone Using a Computer (Recovery Mode)
Put iPhone in Recovery Mode:
iPhone 8, iPhone X or later, iPhone SE (2nd/3rd generation):
Connect your iPhone to a computer via USB cable.
Press and quickly release Volume Up, then Volume Down.
Press and hold the Side button until you see the Recovery Mode screen (computer and cable icon).
iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus:
Connect to the computer.
Press and hold Volume Down and Side buttons together until the Recovery Mode screen appears.
iPhone 6s, iPhone SE (1st generation), or earlier:
Connect to the computer.
Press and hold Home and Side (or Top) buttons until the Recovery Mode screen appears.
Open Finder or iTunes:
Mac (macOS Catalina 10.15 or later): Open Finder, select your iPhone under “Locations” in the sidebar.
Windows or Mac (macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier): Open iTunes (download from apple.com/itunes), click the iPhone icon in the top-left corner.
Restore the iPhone:
A pop-up in Finder/iTunes will detect the iPhone in Recovery Mode, offering Restore or Update.
Select Restore to erase all data and the passcode, installing the latest iOS.
The computer downloads the firmware (10–30 minutes, depending on internet speed). Don’t disconnect the iPhone.
If it exits Recovery Mode, repeat Step 1 and try again.
Set Up the iPhone:
After the reset, the iPhone restarts and shows the Hello screen.
If Find My iPhone was enabled, enter your Apple ID and password to bypass Activation Lock. Reset the password at iforgot.apple.com if needed.
Options:
Set Up as New: Follow on-screen prompts for a fresh start.
Restore from Backup: Use an iCloud backup (select Restore from iCloud Backup during setup) or a computer backup (connect to Finder/iTunes, select Restore Backup).
