Digimon Adventure - Low Level Part 2: Leomon and Ogremon
Another highlight for this video series. By now, all the Digimon sans Patamon have been able to evolve into their Champion forms, and most of the battles leading to those were kinda easy (the first video of this challenge was the notable exception).
The two battles shown here, fought at Infinity Mountain in quick succession, represent a spike in difficulty which is a general tendency during the earlygame.
For one, your party is split into two equal parts (3-3-1 actually, Patamon not taking part due to being a scrub... but that's okay, as the next video will be entirely about battles involving Patamon) and you can't change the equipped digipieces in-between the fights. Since some of the important skills, like Heal and Attack Charge are available in only one piece, this means we can have a healer only in one party (items still exist, but I try to abstain from using them whenever possible because neither shopping nor item farming exist in this challenge sadly).
Agumon and Gabumon are consistently the two heavy hitters most of the time in this challenge, and they happen to be in two separate parties. Agumon gets my SP equips so that he spam his hardest hitting move non-stop, while Gabumon gets all the ATK-bolstering digipieces instead. This ensures I have at least one good attacker available in each party, and this is very often the way things should be until the second half of the game (of course, properly levelled, you need less support than a low level party does, so your support characters will mostly be supporting via chip damage).
Leomon's specialty is his counterattack that occasionally kicks in whether the attack targeting him connected or not. His ST and MT moves also hurt, and it quickly stacks with the counter damage. Kabuterimon is the game's best tank but worst damage dealer (I suppose Patamon is worse when he is lagging behind in evolutions, which is most of the game basically) so he gets Heal and Attack Charge. The strat is to give Greymon 2 ATK boosts while keeping the party healthy and with Togemon contributing some damage. Togemon needn't be healed because he got an auto-revive digipiece which will activate once.
Since Leomon focuses on neutralising Palmon completely, Greymon and Kabuterimon are untouched and safely finish Leomon off.
Ogremon, our next opponent, has another neat reaction ability, that being Anger. This ability sometimes increases his attack by one stage when he's being hit. If it kicks in just twice, he becomes an unstoppable OHKO machine - for low levels anyway.
Since I lack a healer in this party, I should describe how these guys are surviving. Basically, Ikkakumon is wonderful because of his ability to increase the defence of the entire party by one stage. Use it once and there's a big difference in damage sustained. Even if Ogremon's Anger is triggered repeatedly, his attacks won't quite OHKO barring crits.
Now, we don't start attacking until Ikkakumon has buffed up the whole party with his move. After this, everyone goes all out, first with quick, low-damage attacks that shock or break, then with more powerful ones.
This is easy to lose otherwise.
