Continuing this series with the highlights from the Etemon Arc of the original anime / this game as a result. Patamon is absent after ridding the world of Devimon in the previous video, and Agumon reaches Ultimate level for the last battle of the arc against Dark Network Etemon.

SkullGreymon is pretty bulky, and we don't have Greymon's damage in this battle because, um, SkullGreymon is Tai's Greymon.

I show just how powerful debuffs are... and, if you pay attention, Def Break works twice in a row in this video, which I somehow ended up proving work and not bothering with going for debuffs after -1 in defence/attack (mostly defence).

So which one is it, -1 or -2? It doesn't seem like SkullGreymon buffs his defence anywhere in between or before this, either. Later on in the game, it's most definitely confirmed that -1 is as far as you can go. Perhaps it's -1 for important bosses and -2 for the rest? Something to pay attention to if you're planning to play through this game next, I suppose.

So yeah, buffs and debuffs are just too good in this game. Ikkakumon's Icicle Coat means I don't even need to heal in this fight (and SkullGreymon likes missing repeatedly it seems).

Then, it's Datamon time and he's actually quite tough. You face him once with a full party and then you have to split the party up, one group facing (normal) Etemon and the other fighting Datamon one more time. The criterion by which I decided how to split up the digidestined was their bonds with each other (I severely overestimated their importance, it turned out, as I unlocked everything by the end anyway, in spite of the low level rule keeping me away from certain optional missions - well, most of them really).

This is how the second Datamon fight ended up being against Gabumon and Palmon. Gabumon is fast, powerful, but has poor SP. Palmon doesn't impress at all and has a poor grid. And there's just two of them up against a boss who's pretty hard even for a party of three to take on.

I gotta say I got lucky here, because I actually lost this battle a few times with my additional restriction against using items in battle. Datamon has a nasty counterattack (which isn't an actual counter since you, um, can counter this 'counter'), and multi-target moves including one that can inflict a multitude of debuffs and negative status effects (poison seems to be the most common one) against you, which forces you to re-buff yourself while making healing immediately necessary.

This 'counter' move wasn't used at all on this attempt. The reason why Garurumon guards for the first turn is because it's easy to run out of SP dealing crappy damage before the buffs come in, and waiting for the buffs allows to put the SP to good use as soon as you start attacking.

The original motivation for consuming items was the lack of shopping in this game, but there's only one part in-between battles where I found it necessary to heal up before facing the next boss, and about two fights where item use in battle is a must. So I could've used way more items for SP restoration (and HP restoration while not equipping the Heal spell, which is worth something I guess) than I did, but any additional restriction is always welcome - says this seasoned challenger. :P

Finally, we face Dark Network Etemon. Much like Devimon, he acts twice per turn, and he also restores 1000 HP each active turn. So do some other bosses later on, but at this point of the game 1K HP is actually a sizeable amount.

However, MetalGreymon is now part of the party, and not only does he really pack a wallop as our earliest Ultimate, but he seems to get some sort of bonus against the boss (not terribly uncommon in this game, as seen for example from the angels or Biyomon's third tier+ digivolutions), which results in really big damage.

Surviving can be hard at the start, before Icicle Coat is applied by Ikkakumon, and Etemon Chaos can even land some strikes at unevolved folks due to being a bit faster. But once that is done, the only risk remaining is that MetalGreymon's skills are sealed - something I had to prepare for specially by giving Ikkakumon Skill Release. Didn't happen on this attempt, but having to resort to regular attacks instead of skills hurts your damage potential by 5 times or so, so it's a big deal.
