We get further into chapter 4 with two more battles.
Zeltennia Castle RNG:
15 Ramza - Chemist
13 Crono - Monk
13 Lenneth - Summoner
12 Mitsuru - Oracle
12 Ryu - Wizard
Note that Delita is level 1 for this battle, which actually means it's very possible to KO him. Delita being in his special class is also a good way to actually grant Ryu some spillover Squire JP. The poor chap still hasn't learnt Move+1 due to his jointime! He had better luck with abilities in some of the other skillsets however.
Though Delita does a large part of the work here, this is the first time where we can apply Chantage to good effect. Oracle has good MA but also a viable physical poke, so I just make Mitsuru my frontline attacker since Chantage lets her auto-revive each time it's her turn. That's not needed as she doesn't die however, but it did enable me to use her more bravely.
All mages sans Mitsuru got protection from silence because the enemy Oracles love spamming that, and I'd rather not waste precious Chemist JP for Echo Herbs, but Doubt Faith is still a way to cancel out all effects of Faith-dependent abilities. That's why I gave everyone Item instead of something useful like Time Magic - gives them something to do when losing Faith.
Without Agrias and powerful summons, it's definitely not possible to end the map prematurely by taking out Zalmo - we have to go all the way around.
As you can see, even at lv. 1, Delita is too good.
Bed Desert / Balk I RNG:
15 Ramza - Lancer
13 Crono - Time Mage
13 Lenneth - Chemist
12 Mitsuru - Thief
12 Ryu - Wizard (again)
Oh boy, this battle, and I don't have a reliable means of taking him out in one turn with a good full party effort. Balk is healthy and has an innate Defense Up (or just the plain regular one? I forget), so all attacks will do reduced damage against him.
I have two problems - one is keeping Balk close enough so that I can take him out in a timely manner without having to deal with the army behind him (Arrow Guards helps with the bows at least) and the other one is actually inflicting the damage to KO him.
My way of luring Balk in is stripping Mitsuru the Thief (because she's in a crappy class anyway) and just positioning her in places that bait Balk closer to my Life Drain users.
As a Lancer without a decent weapon and Jump range, Ramza can't do much besides chipping in a little bit at the start and keeping the enemies occupied while the Life Drainers drain.
Life Drain's accuracy is really shaky this time around, so some luck is needed, or patience if the battle goes on a for a little while longer. The strat of luring Balk with Mitsuru wasn't as successful because the poison damage got the Chemist to KO range from Balk's gun, so instead of going for my lure he went for the Chemist and escaped further away. I just had to wait for him to come back to land the last drains. Luckily, nobody in the opposing army had any healing to help.
