Digimon Adventure - Low Level Part 9: Piedmon Storyline Battles
We're getting really close to rounding up with this series. In this video I show the 2nd and 3rd (last according to the anime, but this game adds a little twist...) fights against Piedmon, where Patamon finally evolves into his Ultimate form and stops sucking... bigtime actually. I didn't bother recording the 1st fight because it's similar to the 3rd one, only less difficult and interesting.

2nd battle
Okay, MagnaAngemon and Angewomon have to do this one alone. MagnaAngemon's boon (and a large one!) is his Heaven's Gate attack, which has chances of both shocking and breaking the opponent! By making MagnaAngemon fast and giving him the double turn, it becomes possible to severely limit the number of turns the boss gets in battle. In these fights against Piedmon however, MagnaAngemon is needed to deal heavy damage instead, as Piedmon takes more damage from Patamon and Gatomon's attacks, but reduced damage from everybody else, like WarGreymon. He needs to run utility too, especially in this fight since there are only two playable Digimon/trainers.
A big change to our strategy-making is the advent of the Regain move - it gives the target of this spell a second turn, lasting only 3 turns in the battle, meaning it has to be re-applied. Looking back I also see that I applied it without maximum optimisation, because when a character has two turns already (is under Regain status), it is the second action that decides how soon the next turn will come. Using Regain last means you push the caster's next turn all the way to the end of the timeline. Oh well; at least I corrected this error in my playstyle in the battles that were really, really hard, right ahead of us.
Anyway, with just two Digimon, this battle can go wrong really fast. The worst thing that can happen, aside from Piedmon getting too many turns and proccing crits and multi-strikes in too abundant amounts, is that Piedmon uses Charge very early into the fight - this makes him stronger offensively as well as defensively, so both survival and damage-dealing become difficult.
My task here is to buff up early on, healing as often as possible, and begin attacking when under everyone is under double attack up.
Depending on our luck, it is very possible to lose here. I suppose a regular level run wouldn't have any trouble unless the player was really half-arsing it.
Angewomon deals the most damage because she both has a level advantage and also her grid makes it easier to place attack stat increases to stack for a very impressive result. Her counters are more damaging for that very reason.
3rd battle
Last storyline fight against this guy. WarGreymon is available again, but his damage output is unusually low because of Piedmon being an evil-type foe. Thus, he ends up with his support skillset, healing, buffing and lowering Piedmon's defence.
Though he uses it very rarely here, Piedmon is actually potentially much nastier as Charge is replaced with Super Charge, giving him double the normal boost in attack and defence. If he uses Super Charge, then we start needing A TON of healing (luckily, Angewomon can heal innately without any add-ons) and we also need to pray our Def Breaks actually connect, and do so several times in a row, because we have to wear his defence down from +2 all the way down to -1 where you really start seeing big damage.
MagnaAngemon is the one with Regain and gives it to Angewomon as well as himself, as these two are the best form of offence I have in this fight. It doesn't take all that long for Piedmon to succumb to the punishment he's taking and die.
After this fight, I get the 2x Action passive ability. A little bit too late indeed, yet this is an essential skill. It takes a lot of space on the grid (as do many other high-end abilities, whether active or passive), but gives permanent Regain to one character. Naturally, you want to give this character the Regain active ability as well so that he can pass the status to the other two members of your party, making them act (almost) as often as the game's fearsome final and postgame bosses.
So look forward to these advanced strats showcased in the next and last 3 or so videos.
