DJay 95 Plays: R-Type Delta (PlayStation) Longplay
Hey players, DJay here with my first PlayStation 1 longplay on Irem's bulletstorm shmup, R-Type Delta.
Description of the game:
R-Type Delta (sometimes called R-Type IV) is a horizontal scrolling bulletstorm shmup by Irem Software Engineering released exclusively on the original PlayStation in November 1998 in Japan and internationally in 1999 and re-released on PS3 and PS Vita via PSN in February 2007 in Japan and May 2009 in the US. This is the first game in the R-Type series to be released on a PlayStation console, followed by R-Type Final and its later sequels, as well as the first R-Type game to render graphics in 3D. The story of the game is stated to coincide with the 1991 spin-off, Cosmic Cop/Gallop Armed Police Unit. Though an unplayable ship in this game, the R-9A Arrowhead makes an appearance as a captured ship in mission 4.
The story takes place shortly after the events of the original R-Type, set in the year 2164. The R-9A Arrowhead returned from finishing the first Bydo mission, though badly damaged, so much so it ended up being infected and escapes. Astronomers in Central Asia observed strange objects falling from the sky. As they approached closer to Earth, they shrank in size and disappeared from the sensors. Before long, the electronically-controlled weapons systems in many cities went haywire and several abnormal heat signatures were detected. The Bydo have taken control of the orbital annihilation platform, Mortiz-G, resulting in its destruction and have it subsequently Unleashed on Planet Earth. Now, an emergency military operation has being put into effect and a new fighter by Space Corps, the R-9A2 Delta, is sent to investigate and destroy the Bydo. Meanwhile, 2 other ships, the RX-10 Albatross and R-13A Cerberus, are sent on missions of their own.
Gameplay is just like it's many predecessors and spin-offs. Players choose from 4 different playable ships (1 of which is unlockable if the player meets the requirements), each with their own forces and attack capabilities and pilot their ships across 7 challenging stages. Like the previous installments, every stage will put the player's memory to the test. As usual, POW Armors will appear to drop power-ups including laser crystals, missile armaments and Bit Devices. (Speed-ups are the exception as the player can control their speed freely with up to 4 levels, a mechanic shared from 1988 Image Fight) New to the game is the Delta weapon, which can be activated by filling the Dose guage to 100% and can only be filled by absorbing enemy projectiles or inflicting damage with the Force (The rate at which it fills depends on the difficulty, so harder difficulties result in a slower fill rate). Using the Delta weapon will damage enemies on-screen and emanates enemy fire. Unlike most of the games in the series, players cannot die from making contact with barriers or any kind of surface, but must avoid being crushed or making contact with an enemy. Should a player get hit by enemy fire or collide into an enemy or be crushed, the player's ship will be destroyed and must restart from the nearest checkpoint.
Pilot your best suited fighter and get ready to fight the Bydo Empire again.
