Comparing The Nintendo Switch Online GameCube Controller To Original
Nintendo has really upped its game with dedicated controllers for Switch Online and specific systems. The NES and Super Nintendo Switch Online controllers are top-notch. While I wasn't thrilled with the N64 controller's stick (and secretly wished for a six-button Genesis option), each has its place. Now, with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo is expanding Switch Online to include GameCube games! And to celebrate, they've released a wireless GameCube controller. Naturally, we had to grab one to unbox and share with you. Let's check it out!
How to Get Your Hands on One
Just like other Switch Online controllers, Nintendo keeps access to the wireless GameCube controller pretty tight. You'll need an active Switch Online account and have to buy it directly from Nintendo's website. I pre-ordered mine, and it showed up the day after the Switch 2 launched. At $65, it's not the cheapest, but far from the most expensive either.
What's Inside the Box?
Your Switch Online GameCube controller comes with the controller itself and a USB-A to USB-C cable. Keep in mind, you'll need to plug it into your Switch 2 dock or another power source to charge it – no AC adapter included here.
Side-by-Side with the Original
Nintendo has an excellent track record with these throwback controllers, from the NES and SNES Classic Editions to their other NSO offerings. After whipping out the calipers, I can confirm: this new controller is virtually identical to the original, measuring within 0.1 to 0.2 mm. So, expect it to feel just like that beloved GameCube controller in your hands, minus the pesky cord!
New Switch 2 Features
To make this controller fully functional with the Switch 2's new features, Nintendo added all the essentials. You'll find the new C button for chat functionality, plus a Home button, Capture button, and pairing button. And here's a cool touch: like other NSO controllers, when you connect the GameCube controller to your Switch 2 and fire up the GameCube service, you get a unique audio cue – a neat little acknowledgment that you're using the "right" controller instead of a Pro Controller or Joy-Con 2s.
Build Quality: Does It Hold Up?
In short: Yes, this feels like a GameCube controller, and that's a great thing! The GameCube controller is easily one of my all-time favorites, and it's fascinating how much it shares with the Virtual Boy controller's design lineage. If you loved the original, you're going to adore this. It's essentially what many of us wished the WaveBird had been, ditching that awkward AA battery hump.
The analog sticks feel fantastic, though I'll admit they don't quite match the premium feel of the Switch 2 Pro Controller. All the buttons are perfectly sized, positioned, and feel great to press. Unlike the N64 NSO controller, I think this is a much better re-imagining and, frankly, a more precise controller to begin with.
We'll be dropping a full review soon, so make sure you're subscribed to stay updated!
