This 3rd Party HD Camera Actually Works With The Nintendo Switch 2!
Nintendo has finally entered the 2010s with the Switch 2 as it has incorporated some everyday features from the Xbox, Steamdeck and PlayStation into the system. Integrated microphones and optional cameras have been common on other consoles, but it is a first for the Switch 2. Nintendo themselves offer a Switch 2 camera, and they've partnered with Hori to make a great-looking Piranha Plant-inspired camera. But Nintendo's Official Camera is overpriced and the Hori camera suffers from terrible resolution. But what if you could use a webcam you already have and aren't using? We test that theory out with one of our favorite webcams from Rocware, the RC08, to see if a 3rd party camera can actually work with the Switch 2.
When you're streaming or broadcasting, being in focus is extremely important. For this reason, Rocware has added a TOF Module, which is designed to gauge the distance between the subject and the camera lens. This TOF module helps the camera autofocus very precisely and quickly, regardless of the distance from the camera. When privacy is important, there's even a lens cover that slides into place, making sure that only what and when you want to be seen is.
Mounting the camera is super easy, and there are a few different ways you can do this. First up, the base of the camera opens and can be mounted to the top of a laptop screen or monitor. Secondly, if you have a tripod shoe mount or any standard mount, there is a threaded screw hole in the bottom of the unit. This makes mounting the RC08 where and how you want an absolute breeze.
Testing the RC08 was super easy, I plugged in both sides of the USB-C cable into the camera and the Switch 2, waited a few seconds, and then it played the happy little tone to show it was connected. I went into the Switch 2 menu, launched the test camera app, and voila, it worked! I didn't need to add any extra firmware or hack the system at all, I plugged in the camera, it started,d and worked.
I love that I don't have to just use Nintendo's camera with the Switch 2. I plan on performing future tests with more cameras, including 4K cameras, down the road. But in the meantime, I have something that works well for me now if I so desire.
