Doom 3 - Stupid Flashlight Tricks
Are you afraid...of the dark? Yeah, I have come around to somethings: Call of Duty remains a trash series, perhaps 2025 gaming will be better and I'm coming around to getting more episodes of this series, And what better way then to take a fresh look at a game I once hated as much as Half-Life 2 but have changed my thoughts since.
Doom 3 was originally released on August 3rd 2004, Xbox port in 2005, a BFG edition in 2012, and this 2019 port for PS4. Doom 3 is a hard reboot and retelling of the original Doom's story, The year is 2145, We are a un-named helmetless marine sent to the UAC's Mars city for help to locate missing employees, The horror soon happens.
I will say, for the longest time, I had felt that, Doom 3 took the series in the wrong direction, how I felt similar to half-life 2, quake 2, unreal tournament 2004, serious sam 3, so forth but my opinion has changed to a degree now. Doom 3 for 2004 CERTINALY looks good, and this port makes it look even better, I don't know how those Windows ME computers ran it. A lot of Doom 3s makeup is its darkness and the original's flashlight rule is why I hated it a lot, you couldn't have a weapon out and the flashlight at the same time.
Here? Tapping L2 controls the flashlight, A MUCH needed option. Another major part of Doom 3? Is atmosphere, I know that even today, Doom itself and Doom 2, Final doom are often more cartoony and such vs violent and gritty as later entries, Doom 3.. is legitimately, unsettling with its shadows, ambience, and sound cues. There's more emphasis on dodging, turning around and close combat like half life vs the open frantic firing of older doom games.
The weapons are bit.. Pea shooter for me? The pistol, shotgun, and so forth don't have the same punchy feel but still are good weapons. I have felt that Doom 3's shotgun is not exactly a step up from the Supershotgun or the OG shotgun, but it usually can take most things out without issue, Stamnia meter? it can fuck right off but I guess theres 2 ways of handling combat here. Level design isn't half bad, skipped some ammo supplies because, tbh, I didn't bother with trying to figure out passwords.
