1240 Attempts?! How come?
Well, the answer to that question is very simple and I will explain later. For now, I wanna discuss how much I have improved. My first ever speedrun on any doom game was this map in 2 minutes 37 seconds. I was very proud of that run, however, looking back I realised that it was good, but not good enough. So here we are, 18 seconds faster than when i started 6 months ago.
I believe the reason why it took 1240 attempts was because of the lucky rolls I needed at the start. If you don't know, the loud explosions at the start are barrels being blown up. These barrels usually kill around 12 monsters at the start, and it can lose you many seconds if you do not get the lucky roll. The lucky roll is when not all the barrels explode, and therefore it leads to only 4 monsters being killed. This can significantly save seconds as you can blast the barrels at greater numbers of enemies, leading to more kills and less cleanup. The only problem with this is that it can add up to a lot of attempts. Just like it did with this specific run.
There's nothing else really to say about the run, so i'll hand it over to my old description of stasis shock, when I was just getting into speedrunning.
Here it is:
"As you may have heard I was very hyped about getting this attempt out as it was 2 seconds faster than my practice run." ~ This did not age very well! Clearly I was inexperienced enough at a lot of doom mechanics and I didn't realise how I could move faster. Infact, I didn't even know what the basic SR40 was, but I still optimised it somehow the first couple seconds. Hilarious
"Get used to it because the maps get much harder from there." ~ Rush map 2 is a prime example of this. Holy shit is that map difficult to speedrun. It's cramped, full of monsters and a claustrophobic's worst nightmare
"The spectres were a real pain in the ass as I often didn't have enough plasma to kill them all, meaning I would have to rely on infighting. From there, the run is pretty simple." ~ The problem here was that I wasn't really managing my ammo that well, if I knew to focus on the spectres instead of the imps in the snow area, then i would've saved more time. The spectres are hard to see making finding them in the last couple seconds of the run a lot harder than necessary.
"Overall this level was a thrill from start to finish, the music was an excellent choice and the combat you have to endure can be quite breathtaking, even when you're not speedrunning." - This about sums it all up with this map.
