Comatose... a prolonged state of being deeply unconscious, which can vary between days and even months. This is usually caused by someone being in severe injury or having a severe illness.
That was the definition that I have collected for the word "Comatose", which fits the title for this map perfectly. This map gives you the doom weapons and takes away everything you loved about the mechanics of monsters. No longer can you hear their movement or their wake up calls, instead all you hear is the droaning ambience that sweeps across this abandoned hellhole that you are stuck in.
This place gives me straight Chernobyl vibes with all the signs of anarchy and anti-semitism. You are never given a reason to be in this place nor were you told what has exactly happened. You are a player searching for the hidden and gruesome wonders of this forsaken world. With a whopping 23 secrets, this map offers a lot of potential for people who are into exploring open worlds for hidden treasures.
Funny enough, the reason i played this map was because I looked on the top 100 most memorable maps, and we picked a number between 1 and 50. And Comatose (I believe being 13 on the list) was the one we eventually decided on. I sat there, thinking I was going to play casual doom like any other map. But this absolutely shocked me on first playthrough, it was nothing like I had expected.
The combat of this map to most people is enough to turn them away from completing this map. Pretty much all the monsters are invisible and you are using your instincts of doom combat in order to make yourself clear throughout the map. Since you cannot hear them except for when they attack, it becomes super tedious to squint your eyes closely and find these critters that lurk about.
This map is biblical and through the combat and scenery, it shows all the outcomes of this situation. With the illuminati representing God, how God looks down upon doomguy and watches him struggle for his worth.
I believe it was mount pain that made the theory up about purgatory, and it is absolutely something I can see. With all these catastrophic flashbacks to tragic events, you are the one fighting to solve the mystery. And I think I did it. I think I managed to kinda form my own story, so here it is:
Before doomguy, there must have been some apocalypse (due to all the plague doctor outfits), a disease that wiped out mankind, turning them into demonic ghosts. This disease must've caused havoc along with anarchists, explaining all the swastikas and pentagrams. And as a result, the whole town became isolated, as people were brutally slaughtered, sacrificed and diedby being deeply burrowed into the plague. And Doomguy is here, being someone known for killing demons, to do God's bidding and rid the town of sin.
It all goes to show that creativity can really make a level ten times better.
What I can say about the speedrun is do not attempt a UV-Max unless you like the feeling of pain. I have spent several attempts looking for the last monsters that have hidden in small areas and have pussied out. This map is an absolute gauntlet to UV-Max and I do not encourage it to pretty much 98% of doom enjoyers. If you do want to attempt this run, good luck, you will need it just incase the last 2 monsters run away again.
Having played highly decorated levels casually such as God Machine, Goetia, Grove, Nuts3, Anagnorisis, The Ancient Navajo Wolf Warp and so many more. This is beyond those things. It takes a creation and successfully merges it with the combat so smoothly to the point it should be it's own video game.
The creator of this map has truly blessed us in 2016 with this creation, and I feel as it half the time it is underrated. It shouldn't be seen as the level with all the invisible monsters but an artistic attempt at once again revolutionising the doom community.
I would absolutely love to play this map again, but I think I will stick to playing casually (or maybe try a NM100S speedrun which Shepardus suggested).
