I was not kidding when I said this map-set was gonna get hard. Masquerade shows it's true colours right from the start, it's fast paced, brutal and absolutely claustrophobic!
So many of these fights are highly luck based and require really good movement from the player. In a run however, there's even more luck involved as well as some tricks that make the experience even more brutal. Even though i've only done 177 attempts, this has to be one of the hardest maps i've managed to speedrun.
The start is ridiculous. 4 barons are set to rip you apart right from the go, so go around the pillars and shoot a bullet to wake up the other monsters around. The cacodemons should act as a meat shield from the mancubus (which can do a ton of damage), and that can help you progress to the rocket launcher area.
The rocket launcher fight can go wrong pretty easily. you need to crowd control whilst hiding in a pigeon hole and that's easier said than done. A lot of my runs ended here. Once you do that, hit the switch, pre-fire a rocket up to the imps and grab your berserk as a prize.
The next part is easily the most tricky to pull off. You need to kill the shotgunners and pre-fire a couple rockets at the revenants before waking up the vile. Then the vile can project you to the red key which skips a pretty tough fight for later. Ancalagon used this exact strategy but without firing at the revenants beforehand. I tried this and to put it simple, it was AWFUL. The revenants were complete dicks, they would either block the red key, fire homing missiles and do a ton of damage or attack the arch vile which then causes it to in-fight. So many more things go wrong in this fight with the revenants alive. Unless you're a doom god, kill those things instantly.
Once you've pressed the switch past the crusher, strafe run 50 your way over to the other side of the map. It's not usually too bad but you can get blocked by the mancubi chilling there, which is an instant restart. You get plenty of rockets there in which you can clean up the enemies on your side. Then you can get the other key, which is accompanied with a super shotgun.
The next fight is also very luck based. You're trapped in a tight pit between imps, hell knights and an arch vile. Go ham with the plasma rifle and pray to RNG that the vile is stunned at least once. That 3% pain chance can make matters worse and the viles can do a ton of damage. Just try not to get cornered and take care of the vile asap. On your way out, corner the vile, plasma it to death before taking care of the revenant. You'll have a higher chance of taking no damage there.
Finally, there's the final fight, which is initiated when hitting two switches (red and yellow skull key). This gives you the BFG, plenty of ammo, a megasphere and 2 cyberdemons to deal with. To be honest, it's not awful, but your nerves are the main killer at this point. Try to kill the roaming cyber quickly, make your way to the fight you skipped, clear that and then kill the sniper cyberdemon.
To put it in a summary, this map is a great introduction to Ribbiks. This shows how relentless Ribbiks can be when it comes to mapping along with the demand he puts you under in these fights. Even on casual playthrough this map is still noticeably difficult compared to the other maps you've witnessed so far.
Strap in folks, this is the first map of 3 titans.
We're only getting started...
