Evolution Worlds - Gamecube - First hour, Intro, first dungeon and boss gameplay
The Nintendo Gamecube entry of the Evolution RPG series turned out to be reworked port of the two Dreamcast games combined into one. On the face of it merging Evolution: The World of Sacred Device & Evolution 2: Far Off Promise into one was a great idea, trouble was the first game was cut down to little more than a prologue with at best only a third of the first game remaining. Instead this end up more of a port of the second game with some of the first game added, some balance changes and a full English voice dub.
Another issue is the fact many fans where expecting Evolution Worlds to be a new instalment in the series. Not just a rehash of the previous two games, which left many Dreamcast owning Gamecube fans somewhat disappointed assuming you could find a copy. As here in the United Kingdom Ubisoft did their best to bury the game in fact we aren't even sure it got a release in the UK, all we can confirm is that there is an English & Italian PAL skew. The version shown in video is the German & Spanish release, which had all the English text on the disc.
If you haven't played it Evolution is a rogue dungeon RPG series, Which stars Mag Launcher, Linear Cannon, Gre Nade, Chain Gun, Pepper Box & Carcano. Yes all the names have a clear weapons theme. Mag Launcher is an adverturer out to make a name for himself and restore the Launcher family honour. You explore ruins, which use randomly generated title sets for each floor. The aim is to explore each ruin and defeat the boss found at the end of it, find items and equipment to sell or equip. Most of the characters use Cyframes which can be upgraded or equip with new parts, you can also earn Tech Points which can be used to unlock new skills. Giving all the player characters a large selection of skill to use in combat. The story is a fun and upbeat adventure and once you beat the game you have the after game that sees Mag paying off the family debt.
Enemies are randomly place on each floor and you can choose to avoid or fight them or avoid them. Gain and advantage or disadvantage if you can surprised them from behind or if they surprised you. Combat is turn based with a action order showing who goes next. You also have a formation system that allows you to move characters to the front or back, this affects your movement order, defence and attack.
While the random nature of most of the dungeons makes them a rather repetitive, Evolution Worlds is a solid RPG, that isn't going to break the mould and there are far better RPGs on the system like Baten Kaitos, Paper Mario and Skies of Arcadia Legends. As far as rogue games goes there aren't many on the system and it's still a decent title. PAL owner be noted the game is partly optimised for 576i 50Hz, so can't be forced in 480i 60Hz, the PAL version isn't easy to find either.
