The only mandatory battle here is the boss fight against Kefka. Every other Imperial soldier party, including the Rider, can be skipped. In this video I show exactly how this is accomplished. No Sprinting required, in this case (will be a necessity in the Opera House when avoiding the rats).

The first real boss battle with Kefka can be a disaster IF you forget to take Celes with your main party. If you commit this crime, pray that he uses normal attacks/opts for statuses instead of casting his terrible spells. Bolt, Ice 2, Poison... All these spells kill the low level party.

My party choice was Gau (obviously), Sabin, Cyan and Celes (again, obviously). Celes is essential for the party's survival, since some of the spells are almost 10 times more powerful than party members' HP.

It is vital to time Runic properly; fortunately, this is not very hard, because Kefka is not all that quick with casting those spells.

Raging Bomb with Gau for powerful Blazes and blitzing AuraBolt with Sabin does nice damage, especially with Earrings equipped. I gave Gau the Earrings and Sabin - RunningShoes. They both use magic attacks, but none of them are absorbed by Runic. Cyan does the lv. 1 Bushido skill for okay damage.

Having all party members in the back row allows everyone to survive Kefka's normal attack even if it hits critical. He only has around 3000 HP or so, meaning that the battle doesn't take too long.
