Much tougher maps kick in. I think it's not so much the lack of Gafgarion (though one can dream Delita stuck around for longer) but rather the map layout makes things tough and Summons are incredibly overpowered in the NTSC PSX version of the game (they were nerfed a good bit in the PSP version, which is based on the original JP version of the game apparently).

Ramza - Squire
Crono - Thief
Lenneth - Priest
Mitsuru - Thief
Pretty bad, but female Priest doesn't have the worst MA, and Ovelia's equips provide a very noticeable boost to the stat. Ramza being Squire (UberSquire gets heavy armour from chapter 2 and onwards) mostly means he can tank, i.e. do things like get to places where a spell is about to be cast just to heal a more vulnerable party member with a Potion (he does this to Crono at one point).
The reason why Ramza doesn't tank anything more than that is because Mustadio is the one getting into danger, and since I thought the extra 2 Brave (for the rest of the game) couldn't hurt, I go ahead and opt to save him. It seems that Mustadio's AI detects that he's the strongest bloke around (in comparison to lv. 1 doods) so he rushes forward a lot more than usual, which results in some really quick suicides.
Even then, the two Wizards can target Mustadio on the same turn, and depending on Faith/compat, he may not live to see the next turn. I got really lucky on this attempt, and was able to KO one of the Wizards midcharge (because he was charging a slower, more destructive spell).
Some early knockback crits got me an advantage that I needed on this tough map (an Archer being knocked back one space cancelled out her action entirely), and I soon found myself in a situation where I just needed to deal with two sandbagging enemies (Wizard with Cure and a bulky Knight - like all of them I guess).
The fight lasted a while, so I had the freedom to grab some crystals. The reason Mitsuru got absolutely nothing out of the first one (the Wizard we killed first) is because she doesn't have access to the Wizard class. Nor do Ramza and Lenneth actually. Occupying the crystal square is always a valid way of preventing the enemy from doing the same and recovering all HP, of course.

Ramza - Thief
Crono - Knight
Lenneth - Knight
Mitsuru - Knight
Horrible, just plain horrible.
3 Knights, two of them being female, and Ramza getting Thief. Since he had the JP for Yell at this point, I just casually gave him the Guts skillset so that he'd have some sort of contribution even if stuck in an awful class (which Thief certainly is in this challenge, when Martial Arts and PA stack equips aren't there to help). He just stands on the same spot, Yelling somebody (preferably Agrias) or himself if nobody else is in range.
The one advantage Knights have is the HP granted by heavy armour, and we did get two wonderful sets of that from Agrias and Gafgarion in the beginning of the second chapter. Sadly, much of this equipment gets broken in this very map, which makes our LITTLE MONEY problem a BIG one in this challenge.
So... Those Summoners. Without long-range attacks, good luck killing them before they summon their stuff for absurd amounts of damage. Things like Mustadio gun crits with good/best compat can make slight changes to this, but as a rule, you just need to spread your people around, heal them (and Potions are such a terrible means of healing when everything has ~150 HP from heavy armour and takes a little less than that from Summons sometimes) and then just leave the Summoners alone since they're out of MP and can't really apply any more pressure while we deal with the Archers and Knights.
Mustadio was reclassed to Chemist because I still want my magical classes dammit! )))) Some spillover JP can never hurt.
Also, the Knights' damage to my lv. 1 party becomes progressively heavier and heavier with every map it seems. This gets really bad around Golgorand Execution Site or so.
