[1,000 VIDS] Moogle Only / No Dash Playthrough in Chocobo Racing (PS1)!
I noticed I reached 1000 videos a few weeks back, even though YouTube would display a number 16 digits lower than that (now it just doesn't display anything, which I guess isn't anywhere close to being the most annoying change they introduced rather recently).
I don't really know if it's my 1000th video or my 1016th, but I never did properly celebrate the milestone so now's a good time whichever video this one is (I don't feel like counting so many vids one by one...).
I figured it would involve moogles in some way, and this one clicked quickly. Mog is one of the playable characters in the Chocobo Racing PSX game, not quite the protagonist but close enough (he talks a lot during story mode and has a humorous personality... which is nothing like mine I swear!).
I couldn't find any stats for this game's characters anywhere, but based on experience it appears that Mog is a fast character who takes a bit more effort to turn well. His special skill, Flop, appears to be more useful than I've been thinking, according to some doing more than bypassing terrain - it seems to give Mog an immunity to fire spells for instance. I'd hardly take it over the other useful skills available though.
So in this video I play through the story mode, and since this is my 2nd time I get to unlock Squall @ FFVIII Circuit. My only character is Mog, and I can choose any skills besides Dash, which is kinda broken in story mode IMHO - accumulate a large enough lead against the foes and even if they manage to spam a lot of high-level spells against you, they're not catching up with you.
I played this on an emulator on my PC, with an USB joystick rather than the keyboard. Still, the controls are a little hard for me to get used to at the start (I have to use the analog stick to change the direction for example, whereas I'm more used to doing quick gentle taps using the directional buttons of my PSP, which is what I've been playing this game on a lot lately). So it could be better than that.
My choice of skills is something like this:
Flop - because it's the only one available with Dash banned.
Grip-Up - it's better than Flop (because anything is better than Flop...).
Mug - it never hurts to steal somebody's spell. If I can mug something Goblin has stolen or even something the black mage charged up then it's a big bonus.
Magic Plus - this isn't nearly as powerful when Goblin is around, but it's better than nothing.
Barrier - Goblin being around makes Magic Plus less effective, but the real reason I pick this is that you have to backtrack a significant portion of the map if a spell strikes you while you make that one jump (experienced players will know what I'm talking about). Barrier makes me less likely to experience this.
Magic Plus (again) - boosting stones is good, and I can allow myself to risk a little bit (Goblin is still around).
Barrier - for the final map, Fantasia. This doesn't block Megaflare sadly, but the Ultima spell tends to get out of control on this map so this is a handy skill to have.
Megaflare - this is a long map so I have more chances to use this pretty broken skill than usual. It's probably the least situational skill of those available in the game (even Dash can be a burden on a hard-to-manoeuvre map like Fantasia).
Overall, I just want to state the obvious - Goblin is annoying, because all strats involving gathering spells of the same kind are doomed to failure if this guy is taking part. This is why I often play as Goblin myself - to give myself the freedom to gather spells.
I gotta say though, I must be pretty bad at this game in spite of most of the storyline maps being trivialised in this video (it's easy though). I just unlocked Bahamut Mode, and it's actually really hard to emerge victorious in one of those cups! Crazy stuff.
