There is something to be said about a game that is confident enough to essentially simulate an office job. Going back and forth to your desk on the thirteenth floor of a building in the London Docklands, you make your way through files and assign resources to tasks. The twist here is that your tasks relate to things like wiretapping, kidnapping and assasination. Not exactly your standard career!
Floor 13 takes a subject that is commonly associated with action and adventure in espionage, then spins it on its head by purposefully slowing things down and forcing you to disengage with the actions you are taking.
There is a distinctly British flavour to the game, with still shots of Number 10 and a focus on the representation of events in local newspapers holding sway over your every move. This matches up well with the gloomy atmosphere and dry humour in the game, all of which comes across as extremely heavy and cynical in a way that will inevitably prove divisive.
Some will find the game's approch fairly difficult to engage with, given the slow pacing and lack of variety in the gameplay. For a niche audience, though, Floor 13 is a strangely gripping and through-provoking title that forces an unexpected amount of introspection through its minimalism.
