There are a lot of beat-em-ups out there, but few as outwardly silly as Growl. Taito's arcade brawler had a wholesome message mixed into a 80's action movie-esque dose of ultraviolence.

Growl (known in Japan as Runark) is a beat-em-up that uses its setting to provide some unique moments within what is otherwise a fairly straightforward brawler.

The gameplay itself is nothing too outrageous - you have a relatively small number of attacks, with most of the strategy coming from avoiding getting surrounded by large groups of enemies. Deciding when to keep hitting an enemy when they are on the ground and when to use the time to reposition is about as much brain power as is required here.

There are a good variety of weapons and some fun setpieces, like fighting atop carriages on a moving train. The real joy, though, comes from the frills. The silly voice lines, the unexpected animal assists, the enemies who explode into gibs when they are killed - there is a sense of humour to Growl that is bizarre and uplifting in equal measures.

And the ending is... something else. I haven't spoiled it in this video, but the game is worth playing just for the last few minutes alone!
