There's bound to be a certain level of cynicism surrounding the recent announcement that the absurdly delayed and then purportedly cancelled Duke Nukem Forever project has now been taken over by another studio which has, somewhat implausibly, promised to release the game next year.

To put things lightly, I'm not one of those cynics.

Instead, I'd argue that the affable Randy Pitchford and his increasingly popular Gearbox Software are a perfect match for the Duke Nukem series. Aside from being an established shooter developer with a long history of hiring former 3D Realms employees, Gearbox proved with Borderlands that they know both how to produce fast-paced, deliberately non-realistic shooter gameplay and - equally as important - how to inject a healthy dose of juvenile humor into any game in a manner that is clever and knowing rather than trite and, well, juvenile.

That said, given the protracted development cycle of the game I'm sure even the finished version of Duke Nukem Forever will be a bit rough around the edges, graphically somewhat inferior to modern shooters and probably a little dated in terms of its actual gameplay. That's fine by me; all I wanna do is blow up some alien bastards. Also, aside from wanting a quick fix of nostalgia I support the return of old school, refreshingly stupid shooters in general - and who better to spearhead such an uprising against the military shooter regime than the King himself?

It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum, indeed...

Note: In this video, Duke Nukem 3D is played using the EDuke source port in 1280*720 with High Resolution Pack installed and Polymer lighting enabled.
