The faction system in Gothic 3 was impressively non-linear, but it didn't necessarily make any sense from a logical standpoint. The player could finish countless quests for one faction without spoiling his or her reputation with an opposing faction; indeed, the game could only be played successfully by trying to serve as many masters as possible - sometimes with very strange results.

Risen seems to go for a slightly more structured approach with defining (as well as clearly telegraphed) decision points being presented relatively early on in your relationship with a certain faction. For example, I only had to finish a few faction-specific quests in Harbor City to become associated with the rebels/bandits and have the Inquisition refuse to even speak me (as can be seen in this video).

Also included in this clip is the moment (always an important one in Gothic-style games) when I get my first armor. It cost me a fortune and required becoming very friendly with a faction, but it's a very welcome change from what my nameless hero has been wearing so far...
