Hideous Destructor Acc's Follower | DUMP 1 - Gatehouse | No Failure Run | Part 1
When it comes to companion mods, a lot of Doom mods chose to have the companion either be extremely powerful and/or have a variety of cheaty abilities in order to keep up with your pace from having high speeds to using teleportation. But what if you don't want that? What if, you have a companion mod that you need to genuinely take care of, without all the cheatsy stuff, but makes up for the vulnerability by being an efficient and versatile friend with tons of options to pick?
In comes Accensus' Hideous Destructor Follower mod. A mod that seeks to bring you a friend in HDest to fill in that empty void in your heart while still keeping to the spirit of what makes HDest special! Like I said before, you do need to take care of them. They can run out of ammo (which only you can provide to them), you need to staple them if they're wounded, they can die (in which case you need a blue potion/archangel/blue Frag energy in general to revive them or carry their corpse to the next map to find the means, unless you leave them behind and they disappear completely, you terrible leader, you), and even with their good weapons, they won't save you if you run a slaughterwad. However, you can order them around from afar to hold position or go somewhere, give them armor to better defend themselves with, give them medkits/stimpacks that they will then use to heal you if you're incapacitated, you can carry them on your back incase they got stuck, and they're effective enough with their 3 weapons (ZM noGL, Boss, and Bronto) that they could very much save your life when the going gets tough! Who could ask for more, really? I'll be putting Acc's Follower in the title to mark anytime I use the addon, which by the looks of it, will come more often the further I attempt to conquer more dangerous maps that I couldn't in solo.
Now, the follower mod itself actually doesn't use the sound/sprite/text that's in this video. I've taken the liberty to modify it a notch to fit my own purposes, giving the look and sound of the soldiers in H&D1, this one being particularly based on Paul 'Pilot' McGatt, our lovely high Reaction soldier. Though the idle voices are from the H&D1 expansion's briefings. Anything to further slap me with that old game's nostalgia, hmm? Hah!
Regarding the map itself. Gatehouse is really nice map, good looking architecture, no mandatory secrets to be seen, and some nasty traps here and there. Was actually planning to do a short vid of it, but I kinda underestimated the resistance in this map (which I suppose is good to truly test the follower mod's abilities in the field), so the run's split into 2. DUMP1 in general is a really good mapset, though some of the maps are quite tough to NFR with HDest. I suppose now with this, the possibilities have been increased a notch. How exciting.
