57Shovel Knight is an amazing game. The 2014 platformer hearkened back to the retro days of NES classics like Mega Man, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and more. At the end of 2021, developer Yacht Club released a roguelite-puzzle spinoff called Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon.
How did the team pull this off? How did it take all the good stuff about Puzzle Knight and condense it all down into a totally different game? Switching genres, perspectives, and mechanics is no easy task, so this spoiler-free video dives into how Yacht Club made the transition happen. It’s a story that starts on Twitter and includes all the game’s items, NPCs, enemies, and bosses -- plus some totally new ones like Prism Knight and Scrap Knight!
Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon is available now on PC, PS5, PS4, and PC. If you want to play the original game first, you can grab Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove on any of those platforms as well as Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One. Treasure Trove includes the original game, the Showdown multiplayer mode, and three extra campaigns starring Plague Knight, Specter Knight, and King Knight.
