How Metroid Became The Mother Of Metroidvanias
The influence of Metroid cannot be overstated. Games like Hollow Knight, Axiom Verge, Yuko’s Island Express, and so many more owe much of their design to what Nintendo created in 1986 when Metroid debuted on the NES. It was a combination of the platforming of Super Mario Brothers and the exploration of Zelda, with a heap of permanent power-ups to help Samus survive the alien planet of Zebes.
These ideas only grew in the following years, as the likes of Super Metroid and Metroid Prime found their way to the SNES and GameCube, respectively. But the whole Metroidvania genre, as it would come to be known,l started with the original Metroid. That’s what we’re exploring in this video.
If you’ve never played the original Metroid, there are plenty of easy ways to do so. We played it via the Nintendo Switch Online NES app. You owe it to yourself to play it too!
