How Final Fantasy Got Its Iconic Battle Menus
The Final Fantasy series is iconic in so many ways, and it all started with the original 1987 adventure. The RPG’s turn-based battle system is especially noteworthy because of the way its menus are presented. Final Fantasy menus have evolved over time, but they’re a staple of combat, be it real-time, active-time, or turn-based.
Koichi Ishii worked on many early Final Fantasy titles and even directed FF 11, but he started as the battle graphics designer on the very first game in the series. His inspirations for the menu design might surprise you, and that’s what this video digs into.
If you’re looking to play a Final Fantasy game, you have a seemingly endless selection at this point. Playing the true original might be tricky, but ports are available on mobile devices and Steam fairly easily. Otherwise, Final Fantasy 7 Remake has been a smash hit, and FF 16 is on the way.
