It’s spooky season here at FrameWork, and the first of our vicious videos for October is all about Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The 1997 classic is when the series went full Metroidvania, offering fans a full castle to explore, tons of power-ups and equipment to find, and a totally fresh Castlevania experience.

Previous games like Simon’s Quest, Dracula’s Curse, and Rondo of Blood had their own dose of non-linearity, but Symphony of the Night broke the mold with a full-on Metroidvania adventure. This video dives into how that happened and how Symphony of the Night fused its own platforming traditions with the tenets of a different genre.

If you’re looking to play Symphony of the Night yourself -- and you totally should -- you likely don’t have access to the PS1 or Sega Saturn versions of the game. Luckily, it’s also available on Xbox 360, PS4, PSP, and even iOS and Android. Start your October off right with a classic!
