How to Add Storage to PS4 for More Games (Best Method)
Running out of storage on your PS4 is a common problem, especially with large game installs and updates. Thankfully, there are a couple of excellent ways to expand your storage: using an external hard drive or replacing the internal hard drive.
1. Using an External Hard Drive (Recommended for most users)
This is the easiest and most common way to add storage to your PS4. It's a "plug-and-play" solution and doesn't require opening your console.
Requirements:
USB 3.0 (SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps or later): The external hard drive must support USB 3.0 or a higher standard for optimal performance. Most modern external drives are USB 3.0 compatible.
Capacity: Minimum 250 GB, maximum 8 TB.
Direct Connection: Connect the drive directly to one of the PS4's USB ports. USB hubs are not supported.
Steps:
Purchase a compatible external hard drive. Look for drives specifically marketed for gaming consoles (like Seagate Game Drive for PlayStation) or any standard USB 3.0 external HDD/SSD that meets the capacity requirements. SSDs will offer faster loading times but are more expensive than traditional HDDs.
Connect the external hard drive to your PS4. Plug the USB cable from the external drive into a free USB port on your PS4.
Format the hard drive as Extended Storage.
Go to Settings on your PS4 home screen.
Select Devices.
Choose USB Storage Devices.
Select your connected external hard drive.
Choose Format as Extended Storage.
WARNING: This process will erase all existing data on the external hard drive. Make sure you've backed up anything important before proceeding.
Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the formatting.
Set as Application Install Location (Optional but Recommended).
Once formatted, you can set the external drive as the default location for new game installations.
Go to Settings Storage.
Press the OPTIONS button on your controller.
Select Application Install Location Extended Storage.
Move existing games (if desired). You can move games from your PS4's internal storage to the external drive to free up space.
Go to Settings Storage.
Select System Storage.
Choose Applications.
Press the OPTIONS button on your controller.
Select Move to Extended Storage.
Select the games you want to move and confirm.
