Steps to Change & Fix Peeling Thumbsticks
Step 1: Assess the Damage
Inspect the thumbsticks:
Peeling: If the rubber is peeling or worn but the plastic base is intact, you may only need new thumbstick caps or grips.
Damaged mechanism: If the thumbstick feels loose, drifts, or doesn’t register inputs, the entire thumbstick module (including the analog stick sensor) may need replacement.
Choose the fix:
Caps/Grips: Adhesive thumbstick covers (e.g., KontrolFreek, Grip-iT) can mask peeling without disassembly ($5–$15). These are ideal for minor wear.
Replacement Thumbsticks: Swap the top thumbstick pieces or entire modules for a permanent fix. This guide focuses on replacing the thumbstick tops, as full module replacement requires soldering and advanced skills.
Step 2: Prepare the Controller
Power off and clean:
Ensure the controller is turned off and disconnected from any charging cable.
Wipe with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust or oils.
Remove the battery cover and batteries:
Open the battery compartment on the back and remove the batteries or battery pack.
Set up workspace:
Place a soft cloth or mat on a flat surface to prevent scratches.
Keep screws organized (use a small container or magnetic mat).
Step 3: Disassemble the Controller
Remove the screws:
Locate five T8 Torx screws:
One in the battery compartment (hidden under a sticker; puncture or lift the sticker).
Two in the top grips (near the bumpers).
Two in the bottom grips (near the handles).
Use a T8 Torx screwdriver to remove all five screws. Store them safely.
Pry off the side grips:
Use a plastic spudger or pry tool to gently separate the side grips (plastic pieces on the handles).
Start near the triggers (LB/RB) and work along the seam to release the clips. Be patient, as the clips are tight.
Tip: Press the trigger down and slide a thin pry tool or cardboard into the gap to hold clips open.
Remove the top plate:
Lift the top plastic piece (near the bumpers and triggers) to access the front faceplate. Be careful with the triggers and bumpers, as they may pop out. Note their position for reassembly.
Access the thumbsticks:
Gently pull the front faceplate away from the controller body, starting near the triggers. You don’t need to fully remove the faceplate to access the thumbsticks, but loosening it helps.
