How to Change Boot order & drive on Windows 11 PC (MSI Bios)
0To change the boot order on an MSI motherboard for a Windows 11 PC, you'll need to enter the BIOS and adjust the boot priorities. This is typically done when you want to boot from a device other than your main Windows drive, such as a USB drive to install an operating system or a diagnostic tool.
Step 1: Access the BIOS
Restart your PC.
During the initial boot screen (when the MSI logo appears), repeatedly press the Del key on your keyboard. This is the standard key for entering the BIOS on most MSI motherboards.
Step 2: Navigate to the Boot Settings
Once inside the BIOS, you'll likely be in the "EZ Mode." This mode allows for quick changes, but for more detailed control, press F7 to switch to "Advanced Mode."
Using your keyboard's arrow keys, navigate to the SETTINGS menu.
Select the Boot tab.
Step 3: Change the Boot Order
There are two primary ways to change the boot order in the MSI BIOS:
Method 1: Using the Boot Priority List
In the Boot menu, you will see a list of "Fixed Boot Order Priorities." This list shows the order in which your PC will attempt to boot from different devices.
Use the + and - keys on your keyboard to move the devices up or down in the list. For example, to boot from a USB drive, move your "UEFI USB Hard Disk" or a similar option to the top of the list, so it's Boot Option #1.
The BIOS will first try to boot from the device listed as Boot Option #1. If that device isn't bootable, it will move on to Boot Option #2, and so on.
Method 2: Using the Boot Override Menu (for a one-time boot)
You can use the Boot Override menu to choose a boot device for a single session without permanently changing the boot order.
When the PC first starts, instead of pressing Del, repeatedly press the F11 key.
This will bring up a pop-up boot menu. From here, you can simply select the drive you want to boot from (e.g., your USB drive) and the PC will boot from it one time.
Step 4: Save and Exit
Once you have made your changes in the BIOS, press the F10 key to save the changes and exit.
Confirm that you want to save the changes. Your PC will then restart and boot from your new boot device.
