Back Up Your Data (Optional):
If you want to keep your data, back up your iPhone:
iCloud: Go to Settings - [Your Name] - iCloud - iCloud Backup - Back Up Now. Ensure you have enough iCloud storage.
Computer: Connect to a Mac (Finder) or PC (iTunes), select your iPhone, and click Back Up Now.
Verify the backup: For iCloud, check Settings - [Your Name] - iCloud - Manage Storage - Backups; for computer, confirm in Finder/iTunes.
Sign Out of iCloud and Find My:
Go to Settings - [Your Name].
Scroll down and tap Sign Out. Enter your Apple ID password and tap Turn Off (disables Find My).
If prompted, choose to keep or delete data on the device (select delete, as you’re erasing anyway).
Why: This removes Activation Lock, allowing the new owner to set up the iPhone.
Turn Off Other Services:
iMessage: Go to Settings - Messages - toggle off iMessage.
FaceTime: Go to Settings - FaceTime- toggle off FaceTime.
Other Apps: Sign out of apps like WhatsApp, Google, or banking apps manually if they store data locally.
Erase All Content and Settings:
Go to Settings - General - Transfer or Reset iPhone.
Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
If prompted, enter your iPhone passcode and Apple ID password.
Confirm by tapping Continue. The iPhone will restart and erase all data, including the iOS system.
Time: 2–10 minutes, depending on the model and storage.
Verify Erasure:
After the iPhone restarts, it should display the “Hello” setup screen (like a new device).
If it doesn’t, repeat step 4 or check for errors (see Troubleshooting).
Remove from Your Apple ID (Optional Verification):
On another device or at icloud.com/find, sign in with your Apple ID.
Check Devices. If the iPhone still appears, select it and click Remove from Account.
Why: Ensures the device is fully dissociated from your Apple ID.
