About this video: If you want to know know everything about how to make a Minecraft server private and secure, this is the video for you! We show you exactly how to whitelist your Minecraft server and make it private. Security is also super important for making a Minecraft server private, so we cover some of that in this video as well. Specifically, we talk about self-hosting versus remote hosting, how to only allow your friends to join your Minecraft server, how to protect your Minecraft server from DDOS, and more!

First things first, we need to talk about the difference in privacy between a self-hosted server on your own computer and a remote-hosted server on a provide like Apex Minecraft Hosting or GGServers. Self-hosted servers on your own computer are much less private. They expose your IP address which allows people to do everything from find out where you live to DDOS you and take your internet offline. However, remote-hosted servers fix these Minecraft privacy issues. Remote servers don’t expose your IP address, and they include DDOS protection from the start. They also include more security behind the scenes to prevent people from hacking into your server. Overall, a remote hosting is much more secure than self-hosting a Minecraft server

From there though, we can move on from security behind the scenes to how you can make a private Minecraft server for just your friends. This is actually super simple and easy to do through whitelisting. Whitelisting will allow you to make it to where only players you want to join your server can join your server.

The first step of this is to make sure you are OP’d on the server. This can be done by typing /op YOURUSERNAME in the server’s console. Then, move in game and run the command /whitelist on. When you do that, only players you whitelist or OP can join the server. To add players to the whitelist, use the command /whitelist add USERNAME. When you run that command, they will be added to whitelist and be able to join. To remove a player use /whitelist remove USERNAME. That is how you can make a private Minecraft server for just you are your friends. Pretty simple right!

Next up, I want to mention a bit more about DDOS. Server hosting companies do have built in DDOS protection and 99% of the time, this is great. However, as you grow your server, you will find that you are targeted more and more by the 1% of attacks that aren’t caught. Luckily, there are services that can help stop this. Speicifically, TCPShield, linked above, will be able to stop DDOS attacks that are a bit more complicated before they ever hit your server. We use them for BreakdownCraft, and they are great. However, this should not be used with local hosting due to unstable IPs. It is meant for remote hosts with stable connections, uptime, and IPs.

And there you have it! That is our complete guide on how you can make your Minecraft server private! If you have any questions about Minecraft server privacy, let us know in the comments. We will try to help. However, if we did help you make your Minecraft server more secure, please give this video a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel if you haven’t already. It really helps us out, and it means a ton to me. Thank you very, very much in advance!
