My long-anticipated second high score run for Kid Chameleon is finally here! Sorry it took so long, but it was quite difficult to reach my set goal of 1,817,000 points, which I beat by only 1 point! I hope you guys enjoy it, because it's likely to be the last run of its kind, unless new strats are discovered (which there have been: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kenvCLT4TTg).
To shortly explain, the highest possible score I believe I am capable of obtaining is 1,817,211 only if I make absolutely no mistakes. Losing only 210 points from a perfect run is more than I could ask for in a run like this. Here is the breakdown of where all the points were lost:
Wind Castles: -10
Wind Castles II: -20
The Nightmare Peaks I: -10
The Crypt: -40
Beneath the Twisted Hills: -20
The Land Below: -10
The Final Marathon: -100
I'd say the lost points in each level, except for the last three are excusable. Beneath the Twisted Hills and The Land Below aren't even run-killers, but I finished with less than optimal scores, realizing that I would be at this run for even longer than 2 hours, had I tried grinding for more diamonds on those levels. Beneath the Twisted Hills took me 30 minutes to complete before I finally settled for a sub-par score! And then, I just messed up the four-invulnerability combo on the Final Marathon, which only gives one opportunity for trying. As a result, I had to pull off a back-up strat which ultimately resulted in me losing 10 seconds on that level.
The following are just statements addressing differences between this run and the last:
First of all, I clearly show in the beginning of the video that this was played on the Sega Smash Pack II version of the game, which is absolutely impossible to cheat on. With only some insignificant aesthetic, and audio differences, this version is basically identical to the Sega Genesis version.
Second, you might be wondering why I restart rounds a lot in Blue Lake Woods I. You see, if you're on your last life and pause on the exact frame to which you die, you will activate what is known as the infinite lives glitch. Dying on this frame allows you to bypass 0 lives, and actually reach negative life integers, which are represented by random in-game graphics. As long as you never get exactly 0 lives, you will NEVER lose a continue, allowing you as many tries at levels as you desire. This is NOT considered cheating, because it is an exploit of a programming error, and not a cheat intentionally created by the developers.
Third, there is another frame-perfect trick, known as helmet reset glitch. If you restart the round on the exact frame to which a helmet is collected, you will actually begin the level as that helmet in a glitched palette. This trick allows 1-2 second time saves in each of the levels that it is used. Beneath the Twisted Hills awarded me a whopping eight extra seconds for this glitch! Further, an even better TAS-like strat could potentially increase that value to 16 seconds.
