Killer Instinct - Arcade - Attract & Playthrough as Chief Thunder with ending [4K60]
Full gameplay longplay / playthrough / walkthrough as Chief Thunder on the original arcade version of Killer Instinct 1. Rare proved that in the 90s they could succeed with just about any genre and this one on one beat'em up on released looked far better than the Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat titles released around the same time. On top of an impressive combo system and excellent music with a cast of rather unique characters. The mix of pre-rendered characters and 3D like stages such as the rooftops stages had arcade punters lining up to play.
Like Mortal Kombat it included finishing moves and stage finishers, knocking opponents off rooftops was hugely fun. While using the six button layout of Street Fighter. Characters had combo moves that could start, link and finish combos. Allowing players to chain together and create their own combos. You also had breaker moves that could be used to knock an opponent out of a combo, so there was little chance of getting stuck in an infinity combo.
The match round system was also very different to other games, each players gets two life bars and these run concurrently. The round end when a player loses a life bar, but the other player keeps their current health. Down side to this system is it made coming back from a losing fight very difficult, but more impressive if you could. While Black Orchid was by far the most popular character in arcades, due to her easy combos, Chief Thunder was a close second with his range of moves.
The only downside really was the arcade was a bit too hard at points and it was sometimes more luck than skill if you beat the A.I. at the harder stages. It can combo break any move with easy and can react to inputs, Eyedol's damage and heal ability make him a trick fight. You could also select him via cheat code if you wanted to crush your opponents.
The success of the Arcade saw the game get unexpectedly ported to Super Nintendo. After the delay of the Nintendo 64, then known as the Nintendo Ultra 64 hence the advert at the start of the arcade attract. It was followed by a arcade sequel in 1995, that ended up being a total train wreak of a follow up. Which didn't include Chief Thunder and saw moves and controls changed and altered, along with unneeded and unpopular gameplay changes. The end result was a game that players kept away from it and put the series in limbo until the underwhelming 2013 reboot.
