As we’ve been going through the various levels of this game, there has been one who has watched our progress. They thought that we’d never reach them, that the smiloids in our path would be challenge enough that they themselves would not have to do battle. They were after all, the most powerful and capable of the smiloids, there were none that could compared. But we we drew closer, it began to dawn upon the one who looked on that we might actually make it to them, that we might dare to challenge for mastery of the Cyberscape. Such a thought was ludicrous and yet, deep in the back of their mind was a quiet voice that spoke of fear. Perhaps this newcomer was strong enough to get to the end, powerful enough to be the new champion of the virtual world. It was then that the one who’d done nothing but watch realised that all things are temporary, including their mastery of the world they surveyed.

But they would not go down without a fight. They themselves had battled hard to get to where they were and they weren’t about to step aside and let an upstart take all they’d worked so hard for. When the newcomer arrived they would feel the fury of one fighting not just for their title, but for their very life. Whoever won would be the champion of the Cyberscape, the new maze master. Will that be us or will we fall at the final hurdle, the maze master smiling in smug satisfaction at our defeat?

I didn’t know what to expect going in to this game and I have to say, it has thoroughly impressed me. Faceball 2000 has shown me just what was possible on the venerable handheld. It may be a slow FPS but an FPS it is, with difficult enemies, clever puzzles and power-ups to find. It has far more foes than I thought, each one requiring different tactics to best and the way the game adds new mechanics and items one at a time builds up your knowledge of the game slowly without overwhelming you. Though there’s only a few music tracks in the game they’re really good and the sound effects are sparse but effective. There are a huge amount of levels that challenge what you’ve learned and present obstacles that are taxing but manageable, at least at the difficulty I played at. If I were to find something to say against the game, it’s that some of the later enemies feel rather cheap in their tactics and I would’ve like a few more music tracks, but otherwise I really can’t fault this game. The arena mode provides the opportunity for endless deathmatch entertainment and if you had some friends with the game, the multiplayer madness you could have on the go would surely be fun. In conclusion, I commend the people who made this game for achieving what I thought was impossible and doing it well with such limited hardware, creating a fun and engaging experience which I encourage anyone to give a try if they’re a fan of the genre.

So, what’s next? I think we shall be leaving Cyberscape for the time being, but not the world of the future. I’m not quite done with this game genre and I have the perfect game in mind, one that I’ve been itching to play for a while but have never got around to until now. I won’t give any more hints than the one I provided in the video itself, save that it’s going to be quite an experience, one that I’m hopefully going to enjoy.
