Let's Replay X-COM UFO Defence #31: The Trouble with Everything Else
Psionics may be bad, but they’re just one of the many tools the aliens have at their disposal. Since the very first mission, the aliens have had an arsenal of superior weaponry and terrifying machines of destruction that far outclass the ones X-COM can field. We’ve been working to level the playing field somewhat but even when we reach technology parity with them, they will only become a little less dangerous; heavy plasma still sucks no matter what armour you’re wearing and a cyberdisk can still cause havoc. There are still some weapons we haven’t seen used against us, namely the blaster launcher despite the numerous instances where I mix it up with the stun launcher. That is something on its own level of awfulness and while I hope I’ll never be on the receiving end of it, that’s a vain hope more than anything else.
No matter how hard we try, the aliens have one advantage we can never equal; their sheer numbers. We’ll always feel the loss of a single soldier more than they will an entire UFO of troops, because they have an unlimited number of them they can call upon. New rookies can replace the fallen in X-COM, sure, but unlike at the beginning they are often far weaker than the aliens they’re going up against. Better weapons and armour only go so far in bridging the gap, further emphasizing the struggle we’re entering into now we’re halfway through the year.
It’s not going to get any easier any time soon.
