Let's Play Mega Man X6 - Part 1: Introduction to a Whole New Nightmare
Well, I finally got my PlayStation emulator working, so...let's play Mega Man X6! I haven't done a Mega Man game since my first LP, and I was due. This, no doubt, will not be the only Mega Man X game I play, but obviously, I am not doing them in numerical order (and it's highly likely that I'll skip at least one of them entirely). Mega Man X6 is quite disreputable, though...it may just have the worst reputation of any game in the series! (X7 *might* top it, but I'm not sure...) However, the bad rap is one of the reasons *why* I'm doing this one first...and the fact that X6 actually happens to be my personal FAVORITE game in the Mega Man X series. If you think that's amazing, it's even more so when you consider that this game is often cited as being frustratingly hard, yet one of the biggest turn-offs for me with video games is high difficulty. I didn't find MMX6 all that difficult for some reason, though, at least compared to most of the other Mega Man games (in both the original and X series). If this is the first Mega Man X game you've ever seen, though, I highly recommend watching a different LP first, preferably one of the first three games in the series. X6 is quite different from the original SNES MMX games.
This video, I have to admit, is very, very long for only being an introduction video. I blame the cutscenes, since the intro stage itself is neither long nor difficult. The intro sequence and some of the beginning cutscenes recap the plot of Mega Man X5 and tell what is happening when X6 is taking place, which mostly involves a mysterious phenomenon called the "Nightmare". This will come back a lot during the course of the game. It also introduces us to a few characters, such as Signas, the leader of the Maverick Hunters (not to be confused with Sigma, the Big Boss Bad Guy of the Mega Man X series), and Alia, a scientist and data-collector-researcher-type-person. She gives you messages during the stages, explains some things, and gives you background information on many of the bosses.
The intro stage itself is no real threat. It gives you time to practice some of your moves, such as jumping, dashing, firing the X-Buster, air-dashing, and slashing the Z-Saber. Yes, you read that right. In MMX6 and ONLY in X6, if you press what would normally be the special weapon button when you don't have a special weapon selected, you slash the Z-Saber, normally Zero's trademark weapon. The slash is slow and not terribly powerful, but it can often reach places that the X-Buster cannot (although you can duck in X6, which is very useful). At the end of the intro stage, we have the traditional Mega Man X intro stage boss, an enemy that is enormous but weak. I think it's called the D-1000; it's a monster with a little eye-thing apparently using telekinesis on it. The D-1000 is easy enough to beat, and after you do so, an enemy named High Max shows up. You can't damage him at this point in the game (much like Vile in X1), so he will go away after a while. Then you get another cutscene, this one showing a rather shady-looking character named Isoc, and then you go to the stage select screen to begin the main part of the game.
We have our characters, our scene, and our plot...now how shall they develop?
