Let's Play New Super Mario Bros. - Part 13: Chilly Calamity
We now do the secret stages of World 5. 5-A is another athletic level with a new type of mushroom. The ones in this stage are blue and expand and contract horizontally. The stage is fairly short, though. 5-B is another one made almost entirely out of ice, though it is a bit harder than 5-3 was and has a secret exit requiring a powerup from another stage. 5-C is a fairly bog-standard underground level, though it is notable for containing Broozers despite not being a ghost house. The World 5 castle isn't bad, but it can be a bit of a nuisance if you're going for the star coins. Its gimmick is conveyor belts, and lots of them. Naturally, there are the obligatory ice physics as well, though thankfully not on the conveyor belts. The real problem here is that getting the third star coin requires backtracking through a substantial chunk of the stage to pick up a springboard. (Or it might be possible to jump that high unassisted if you take the Mini Mushroom...I'm not sure on that, but at least the stage does provide one.) The boss is Petey Piranha, who seems to show up in an awful lot of games for being such a seemingly minor character. And frankly, the ice in his boss room seems to be as much of a problem for him as it is for you, considering that you can jump on him only once he slips on it and falls. He can also fly and try to drop on you. Upon beating him, we are given access to World 6, making 5 worlds finished and 3 left.
