Let's Play Phantasy Star IV #03: Clearing the Academy Basement
218It's safe to say that the academy has a monster problem. The basement area is teeming with aggressive creatures that wouldn't hesitate to attack the students or the faculty were they to disobey the warnings and venture down there, though so far its nothing that Alys, Chaz and Hahn can't handle. For working at the academy, Hahn is pretty adept at taking care of himself, though he'd of not lasted long in the basement by himself. I imagine that this first area serves as a tutorial of sorts for combat, letting you get used to how the battle system works and get some low risk experience and meseta. I'm the first to admit that I know none of the subtle intricacies of the combat system in this game but I'm sure that's something I'll learn as I go along.
It's only low risk at the moment however. Alys and Chaz have no idea how the monsters managed to get into the basement in the first place, something they need to find out urgently. If they've burrowed in there from a natural cave that will need to be cleared of monsters and then sealed up, but the sheer number of them makes me wonder if something else is going on. Monsters wouldn't have infested the basement so quickly if they were just randomly meandering into it from caves, but what other explanation could there be? Whatever it is, Alys and Chaz will need to deal with it and quickly but after that, who can say where the next bounty will take them. I mean, it's not like this fairly innocuous event is the initial plot hook for a game-spanning adventure which might determine the fate of the world, right?
...Oh wait, there's a high chance that it's exactly that, isn't it? Yep, a really high chance. Let's just hope they keep getting paid along the way, eh? Their equipment costs money after all, as do healing potions.
