Terror missions are always exceptionally difficult, but are even more deadly at the very beginning. Your soldiers are woefully ill-equipped to deal with the aliens and you're often outnumbered as well. The aliens won't be focusing exclusively on finding and killing your soldiers, taking shots at the innocent and defenseless civilians you're trying to save. Each one of them that dies is points lost on the mission, but trying to save them all is a foolish and dangerous goal: there'll be some that'll die long before you discover where they were and ultimately, defeating the aliens will net you enough points for the mission to be successful, provided not too many of your soldiers die.

In all missions but especially night terror missions, visibility is key. Clever use of electro flares will ensure that enemies can't sneak up on you and if you're really lucky, they'll illuminate a concealed foe that would've tried shot from the darkness had you not revealed them. Taking it slow and methodically is the key to reducing casualties, but frankly the first terror mission you go on is going to be a dicey thing no matter how careful you are. Your soldiers simply aren't well enough equipped to deal with the overwhelming forces you're put up against and in the end, all you can do is your best. Don't fret if things don't go great during the first terror mission, as you can always get more soldiers and next time, you'll surely be better prepared.
